Collective and the City Observatory

Situated in a stunning location at the top of Calton Hill - the birthplace of astronomy and timekeeping in Edinburgh - the oldest parts of the City Observatory complex date back to the late 18th century.

The historic site had lain empty and been neglected for many years before Collective, a not-for-profit visual arts organisation, restored and developed it into a centre for contemporary art. The AHF supported the early stages of this project with a Project Development Grant, and also later provided tailored loan investment towards the refurbishment and adaptation of the Old Observatory House into holiday accommodation.

Want to know more about this fascinating site and how Collective has transformed it into a new kind of city observatory? Listen below for an interview with Sarah Morton, former Operations and Facilities Manager for Collective.
