Pretty in pink – Charming chapel sparks new hope for Cilycwm community

Wales

Dating back to approximately 1859, Capel y Groes is a charming Gothic chapel located in the Welsh village of Cilycwm. To this day, the Grade II-listed building remains unaltered and is known affectionately as ‘Capel Pinc,’ due to its distinctive pink lime-washed exterior walls. Capel y Groes, which appears in several paintings by the late Welsh artist, Aneurin Jones, comprises of a main hall with gallery and an attached chapel house.

For the last decade, the residents of Cilycwm have been looking to create a community centre but have had no success in finding a venue. Menter Cilycwm, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation established in 2017, was gifted Capel y Groes by the chapel trustees with hopes that it would provide the perfect space to fulfil the community’s needs.

The Architectural Heritage Fund has awarded a Project Development Grant to Menter Cilycwm to support the project to repurpose Capel y Groes into a community facility for the village and the Upper Tywi area. This was one of 12 grants offered in our first grants meeting of the year, where the total value of awards was £164,340.

Specific plans for Capel y Groes include converting the chapel and vestry into a community hall to provide space for a variety of activities, such as coffee mornings for senior citizens, health and well-being surgeries, arts and crafts workshops, a book club, a youth club, local history talks, and choir practice. The hall may also be used for a range of events, including concerts, film nights, a produce market, weddings, and private parties.

The AHF grant will help fund the cost of a team of professional advisors including an architect to further develop Menter Cilycwm’s plans, bringing the village residents one step closer to their dream community centre.

Aled Edwards, Chair of Menter Cilycwm, commented on this latest award:

"Menter Cilycwm are delighted that the Architectural Heritage Fund have seen fit to support us in developing Capel y Groes for community wide use.  The last two years have been difficult for all and have re-emphasised how important it is that communities meet and interact.  Hopefully, in Cilycwm, this will mean that we also preserve and develop an important part of our heritage."

Pert mewn pinc – capel swynol yn tanio gobaith newydd i gymuned Cilycwm

Yn dyddio’n ôl i tua 1859, mae Capel y Groes yn gapel Gothig swynol wedi’i leoli ym mhentref Cilycwm. Hyd heddiw, nid yw’r adeilad rhestredig Gradd II wedi’i newid ac fe’i gelwir yn annwyl fel ‘Capel Pinc,’ oherwydd ei waliau allanol pinc nodedig wedi’u golchi â chalch. Mae Capel y Groes, sy'n ymddangos mewn nifer o baentiadau gan y diweddar arlunydd Cymreig, Aneurin Jones, yn cynnwys prif neuadd gydag oriel a thy capel cysylltiedig.

Am y ddegawd ddiwethaf, mae trigolion Cilycwm wedi bod yn edrych i greu canolfan gymunedol ond heb gael unrhyw lwyddiant wrth ddod o hyd i leoliad. Derbyniodd Menter Cilycwm, Mudiad Corfforedig Elusennol a sefydlwyd yn 2017, Gapel y Groes gan ymddiriedolwyr y capel gyda’r gobaith y byddai’n darparu gofod perffaith i ddiwallu anghenion y gymuned.

Mae’r Gronfa Treftadaeth Bensaernïol wedi dyfarnu Grant Datblygu Prosiect i Fenter Cilycwm i gefnogi’r prosiect i ail-bwrpasu Capel y Groes yn gyfleuster cymunedol ar gyfer y pentref ac ardal Tywi Uchaf. Roedd hwn yn un o 12 grant a gynigiwyd yn ein cyfarfod grantiau cyntaf y flwyddyn, gyda chyfanswm gwerth y dyfarniadau yn £164,340.

Mae cynlluniau penodol ar gyfer Capel y Groes yn cynnwys addasu’r capel a’r festri yn neuadd gymunedol i ddarparu gofod ar gyfer amrywiaeth o weithgareddau, megis boreau coffi i’r henoed, cymorthfeydd iechyd a lles, gweithdai celf a chrefft, clwb llyfrau, clwb ieuenctid, sgyrsiau hanes lleol, ac ymarfer côr. Gellir defnyddio’r neuadd hefyd ar gyfer amrywiaeth o ddigwyddiadau, gan gynnwys cyngherddau, nosweithiau ffilm, marchnad gynnyrch, priodasau, a phartïon preifat.

Bydd y grant Cronfa Treftadaeth Bensaernïol yn helpu ariannu tîm o ymgynghorwyr proffesiynol gan gynnwys pensaer i ddatblygu ymhellach gynlluniau Menter Cilycwm, gan ddod â thrigolion y pentref gam yn nes at eu canolfan gymunedol ddelfrydol.

Meddai Aled Edwards, Cadeirydd Menter Cilycwm ar y wobr ddiweddaraf:

"Mae Menter Cilycwm yn falch iawn bod y Gronfa Treftadaeth Bensaernïol wedi gweld yn dda ein cefnogi i ddatblygu Capel y Groes at ddefnydd y gymuned gyfan. Mae'r ddwy flynedd ddiwethaf wedi bod yn anodd i bawb ac wedi ail-bwysleisio pa mor bwysig yw hi i gymunedau gyfarfod a rhyngweithio. Gobeithiwn, yng Nghilycwm, y bydd hyn yn golygu ein bod ni hefyd yn cadw ac yn datblygu rhan bwysig o’n treftadaeth.”
