AHF invests in Scotland’s small town landmark buildings

In our latest round of investment, the AHF has awarded £115,763 of grants to 14 projects across Scotland to help communities find sustainable new uses for historic buildings. This quarter, landmark buildings in the centre of towns feature strongly, with awards going to buildings prominently situated in Huntly, Jedburgh and Fraserburgh. 

Number 30, The Square in Huntly sits at the centre of the market town. We have offered Huntly & District Development Trust a grant of £16,029 to further develop a project to re-use the Category B-listed former department store Cruikshanks as a mixed-used community facility. This will provide much needed affordable office space and give visibility to the work of many community groups within the local area. 

The Category A listed Port House in Jedburgh was built by the Jedburgh Co-operative Society and represents an early example of a cast-iron façade with large areas of glass curtain walling - this was to improve working conditions for seamstresses and shoemakers. We have offered £15,000 to Jedburgh Community Trust to develop a mixed-use community resource centre.

The former John Trail Bookshop in the centre of Fraserburgh is unlisted and sits in a derelict state within the conservation area. We have offered £30,000 in total to the North East Scotland Preservation Trust to develop plans to re-use the building as a small hotel and restaurant. The closure of the building in 2009 was much lamented by the local community and this investment will help secure a sustainable future for this valued building.
