Project of the week

Ty’n Llan
Llandwrog, Gwynedd, Wales

Built in 1862 as part of the Glynllifon estate, Ty’n Llan is a pub at the centre of the small, picturesque Welsh village of Llandwrog. The Grade II-listed building was a key focal point of community life until its closure in 2017. In its wake, the villagers were left with no place to meet or socialise, and the need for a community hub quickly became evident.

In February 2021, the pub was put on sale by the previous owner’s estate. Following strong public support to safeguard its future, Menter Ty’n Llan - a Community Benefit Society - was established. In just seven weeks, over £400,000 was raised in shares, and, in June that same year, Menter Ty’n Llan officially acquired the building.

Ty’n Llan’s doors re-opened on a temporary basis in December 2021, hosting weekly chair yoga classes, coffee mornings, a Welsh learners club, a walking club, a gardening club and a youth project, alongside operating as a pub. It eventually closed again in 2024 for complete internal renovation.

Having re-opened fully in November 2025 with a brand-new look, Ty’n Llan has now secured its place at the heart of this village for many generations to come. Today, it offers five modern and luxurious bedrooms for visitors; a new communal space, a spacious restaurant and a kitchen; bookable multi-purpose areas; and a wide range of community events of all kinds.

“Re-opening Ty’n Llan has transformed our village and brought our community back together. It has become the central hub of our village. It is far more than a pub, offering a stunning modern restaurant and activities that appeal to a wide range of people, including French lessons, live Welsh music and activities for children. The AHF funding has helped create a welcoming place where everyone belongs and has strengthened community spirit.”
