Project of the week

Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland

Built in the 17th century by Thomas Staples, the 1st Baronet of Lissan and Faughanvale, Lissan House is an enchanting country residence set within a 260-acre demesne. In 1660, Thomas’ youngest son, Robert, constructed much of the house as it is today, though it was adapted and embellished by subsequent generations. In 2006, the Grade B+ listed house and Estate, along with its historic collections, were gifted to a newly formed trust by the last of the Staples of Lissan, Hazel Dolling, to benefit the local and wider community in perpetuity.

When the house opened to the public for the first time in 2007, thousands of visitors walked through the door. The restoration followed over the next 5 years, and, today, Lissan House – one of Northern Ireland’s most significant historic houses – is an entirely volunteer-run attraction, hosting weddings, heritage tours and a variety of cultural and eco based events throughout the year.

“As a volunteer, I am immensely grateful to the AHF for supporting the preservation of this wonderful old building which has played such a significant role in our local and national heritage. Lissan House and its 250 acres of parkland are invaluable resources for those who seek connection with their historical and cultural heritage and who value opportunities to cherish and enjoy the wonders of the natural environment.

“The Staples family motto, 'Teneo', is as relevant today as ever, so we will indeed keep 'holding on'!”

Sharon Loughrin, Chairperson, Lissan House Trust
