The Moseley Muslim Community Association’s (MMCA) application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a round one Heritage Grant was awarded for the former Moseley School of Art, Birmingham. AHF funded the Project Organiser to develop and prepare the application, and part-funded an Options Appraisal with Historic England. The Options Appraisal identified a long-term sustainable solution, with mixed uses inside the building. The MMCA can now develop their plans to restore this Grade II* Building at Risk, welcoming more people to the building to discover and celebrate its history.
Some of the country’s talented and famous artists were educated at The Moseley School of Art including Peter Phillips (artist and co-founder of the Pop Art Movement), Roy Wood (musician, particularly with the Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard) and Christine McVie (Fleetwood Mac).
The former Moseley School of Art was in the top 10 endangered buildings list issued by the Victorian Society in 2010, and is on the Historic England West Midlands Heritage at Risk Register. This successful round one HLF application will provide development funding to enable the MMCA to move the project forward.
