Portland Works, Sheffield, the birthplace of stainless steel cutlery

A recent open day at Sheffield’s Grade II* Portland Works – the birthplace of stainless steel cutlery – showcased the continuing tradition of ‘makers’ on this site since the 1870s. On-going repairs are enabling more areas of the building to be brought back into use and there is now a waiting list to join this creative community of manufacturers and artists. The building was bought by its tenants and supporters as a result of a successful community share issue and a loan from the Architectural Heritage Fund.
